Orthotics or orthoses are inner soles which fit inside your shoes to correct and guide the motion of your feet. Orthotics are available in a variety of styles, from custom made devices created from a plaster cast of your feet (which may be firm or soft) to softer pre fabricated orthotics which can be modified for your specific need and generic over-the-counter supports.
People who suffer from sore knees, sore shins and lower back pain often have a problem with the alignment of their feet, legs and hips. A common example is if you have one leg shorter than the other. When you stand, you will often flex the longer leg at the knee until it is a similar length to the shorter leg. This adds strain on the knee and can cause your pelvis to tilt to bring the shorter leg to the ground. This action in turn twists the back and can lead to lower back pain.
There are many alignment problems of the lower limbs that will lead to flat feet. This is why it is possible to suffer from a wide variety of aches and pains of the feet, knees and legs despite your level of physical activity.
