Do you experience discomfort or recurring injuries when training? The way you move your body as you walk or run may be contributing towards the problem.
The human body contains hundreds of interconnected bones, muscles, and tendons and when there is an imbalance, other parts of the body compensate. This causes further imbalances that can eventually result in injury.
At Melbourne Podiatrist, we offer video gait analysis at our Brunswick and Sandringham Foot Clinics. Video gait analysis allows our podiatrists to identify anomalies in your biomechanics and put an appropriate treatment plan in place giving you a better chance of avoiding injury.
What is video gait analysis?
Video gait analysis is the assessment of your walking pattern using video footage of your body in motion. It allows us to take a detailed look at the position of your limbs during each stage of the gait cycle. Consequently, we can identify problems and give specific treatment advice.
Who will benefit from a video gait analysis?
Video gait analysis is particularly useful for athletes who want to avoid injury and maximise their athletic performance. It can also help anyone who:
- Has ongoing pain in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or back.
- Wants to ensure their gait is not straining their body.
- Has a history of foot, ankle, or knee problems.
- Is recovering from overuse injuries.
How is video gait analysis performed?
Video gait analysis involves walking and/or running on a treadmill for a few minutes whilst being videoed.
One of our podiatrists then analyses your walking and running style using a specialised motion analysis program that allows us to slow down and analyse your body’s movement frame by frame. We evaluate any pronation and limb placement, looking for structural or functional issues in your legs and feet.
Upon completion of our examination, a treatment plan is recommended to help correct any problems that have been identified. Treatment can include orthotics, stretching regimes, footwear advice, strapping, muscular strengthening, and injury management.
What are the benefits?
Making adjustments to an improper gait can help you avoid possible future issues such as joint pain, arthritis, and lower back problems.
Additionally, correcting gait problems can help reduce a number of common issues including shin splints, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and help reduce the risk of sprains and strains. It can also help align the body better so athletic performance is improved.
